Altitude Ball 2018

With a brief to increase awareness of the RFDS in the WA metro market, raise funds and be the best charity gala in the State, Lux and Muse Bureau joined forces to produce one of our greatest ever events. Having collaborated on the previous four ALTITUDE Ball's at Crown Perth, the 2018 event coincided with the RFDS' 90th anniversary, so we set about achieving the impossible - bringing the event 'back to base' and holding the event inside the RFDS' operational hangars at Janadkot Airport.

From moving aircraft to building a kitchen and creating an independent power supply, the event was a giant logistical challenge, managed closely with the client and their engineers.

Over 1000 guests arrived to the dramatic drumming beats of the Perth Thundercorps troupe before entering the first hangar 'through the sky' - a tunnel styled to emulate clouds with balloons, chiffon and lighting. The first hangar was designed to pay homage to the early days of the RFDS. A warm lighting state designed by Lux that included hundreds of tungsten bulbs, a jazz quintet and the first ever RFDS aeroplane set the scene for a welcoming introduction to the evening. Moving through into the brand new hangar, a circular tunnel lined with rows of LED pixels created an electric time-portal effect, transporting guests into 'the future of the RFDS'.

Following a spectacular Welcome to Country performance by Phil Walley-Stack and his dancers, the dance floor filled as soon as the 42-piece Perth Symphony Orchestra started their energetic tribute to David Bowie, fronted by Katy Steele (Little Birdy) and Justin Burford (End of Fashion). Tasked with educating the audience on the origins of the RFDS, it's journey to where is today and the future of the organisation, namely the launch of the brand new PC-24 jet aircraft, Lux created a fully immersive, multi-layered storytelling experience never before seen in Perth. The result was a jaw-dropping, custom 270 degree anamorphic multimedia extravaganza that incorporated advanced 3D video content, projection mapping, 3D motion graphics, filmed talent and animation. This played right before the renowned auction, encouraging attendees to dig deep, before the night closed out with iconic electro-pop duo, Sneaky Sound System.
